What is a Virtual Road Trip?

We are a family of six (four kids, age 14, 12, 9, and 8) who decided to do a fun little project since we won't be traveling much this summer. We've asked our family and friends to send us postcards from their home town/state/country and from any destinations they may visit on vacation. We will be compiling the information in various ways throughout the summer. Look around through the blog and keep checking back to see how things are progressing. If you are interested in sending us a postcard yourself, please email us at hollarvirtualroadtrip@gmail.com. Thanks for stopping by!

About Us

We are a family of six (two parents, four kids, ... and two dogs).

I am Christy.  When I'm not teaching preschool four-year-olds, I'm subbing at the public schools or decorating the house or making crafts.  Unless my fingers are attached to a keyboard somewhere, you won't find me sitting still for long.  I was a second-grade teacher (pre-mommyhood) and hope to return to the full-time classroom within a couple of years.  College tuition is just looming off in the not-so-far-away future.

This is Mike.  We met at Grove City College in Pennsylvania many, many years ago.  Who would've thought back then that a fraternity party meeting would have ended up like this 21 years later!  Mike is a "senior cyber engineer".  Cool name for someone who designs computer software.  He's the soccer parent of the family.  When he's not at work or relaxing at home, he's often with the kids at some practice... or some game... somewhere in the county.  With four in sports currently, that means DAILY.

Our son B just turned 14.  I can't possibly be the mother of a fourteen year old.  He'll be heading to high school in the fall, and plays soccer for now.  He enjoys hanging out with the youth group at our church, listening to music, playing video games, playing guitar and watching TV.  He is an avid watcher of Fringe (yes, we're a few years late to this addiction) and explains things when I get lost.  (We are just entering season four....)

Our daughter R is 12.  She's about to make me the fourth tallest member of our family.  She is entering seventh grade in the fall and loves to be involved in just about everything.  She plays soccer, was on an OM team (Odyssey of the Mind), enjoys the youth group, plays piano, and is switching from violin to guitar in the fall.  She's also in Spectrum at school, a class for creative students.

Our youngest son T just turned 9 in May.  He's a sweetheart, always concerned for others' feelings and wanting to help out.  He is playing flag football this season (second season at this) and enjoys meeting new friends (his team is in the next town over with all new friends... and never once did that bother him).  His passion is Mindcraft, as it is with many nine year olds, and playing on the Wii U.  If it is an hour where he's allowed on a screen, I can guarantee he's glued to a DS, computer or TV somewhere.

Our youngest daughter G is 8 years old.  She is our spunky child.  We adopted G in 2008 from China, and in addition to flying halfway around the world, she has "come a long way" in other ways as well.  She's a very talented artist and writer.  Although she loves her screen time as much as anyone else, she will also find comfort in writing and drawing in her free time.  She is on a soccer team this fall, as well.

This is Lucy.  She is our 50 pound mixed-breed dog.  She's a great dog... loves to play, loves to snuggle, and pretty easy.  We were told she was a "Golden Lab", but we don't see any Golden in her.  Our recent discussion with the vet has us all believing she's a Vizsla/Lab mix of some sort.  Not positive, but we'll love her nonetheless.

Meet Oliver.  He's our new puppy!  He's been home since late May (after the start of this blog), and is a Shih-Tzu mixed breed pup.  Adorable!  We found him through a rescue league, Last Second Shelter Dogs, and he's blended into the family just fine.  He gives Lucy a real run for her money these days.
